I am often asked as a Middlesex County Credit Card Debt Lawyer if an out of state debt collector can contact you.  Under Connecticut law, in addition to the Federal Debt Collections Act, there are a number of state law protections for consumers that have defaulted on their debt. One of these is the Creditor Collection Practices Act. That act prohibits false and deceptive practices by the original lender to you in connection with attempts to collect the debt. There is also, in connection with debt collectors, a state requirement that such debt collectors be registered with the state.
